Q: Create a list of possible ideas to create a printed surface inspired by your samples

Exploring syringes and leather scraps this week I was very drawn to knitting and capturing syringes with other materials like yarn and leather. This was a subconscious exploration of my idea as I was interested in the idea of responsibility to create change as a young designer and the feeling of hopelessness and immobility that comes with it. I developed my samples in exploring different ways of capturing and trapping syringes with tape, plaster and metal. Therefore in my prints I also want to communicate this claustrophobic feeling of immobility. The ways I can create prints could be: negative space, ink, monoprint, repetition and layering drawings, trapping things inside them. I could also use my knit samples as a stamp on paper to create marks and I could splash ink on paper using syrnges.

Q: Did this week test both your innovative thinking and making skills?

This week was quite stimulating for me as I was so excited by making samples and having to think about the quality of the material, observe and come up with ideas and solutions to turn it into a textile idea/sample. Therefore this week really did test me thinking and making skills as I experimented with mediums I never did before like knitting with leather and using plaster. I do feel like I could do a lot more experimentation and more innovative thinking in exploring my multiples. Next week I am dedicated to trying all the print techniques I wrote down in my reflection.

Q: What connections can you make between innovative thinking and waste?

I think working with waste is something that requires innovative thinking because it is something that is not wanted or is 'useless' Therefore it will take effort and innovative thinking to present a waste-based product or art to be considered an artwork. I also think creating from waste is a very strong skill an artist or designer can show because waste material is usually either deadstock, damaged, unconventional and it requires artists to work around the material which takes away the comfort and freedom of working with bought materials where the material is selected and there is possibility to buy more and more of it in desired shape, texture etc. Therefore the connections between innovative thinking and waste is very strong and I think working with waste is a great way of challenging thinking and problem solving
